MASSILLON MIDDLE SCHOOL TIGER P.A.T.H.S. In 2005, the Massillon City Schools were identified as partners with the Stark County Educational Service Center, Stark County Department of Job and Family Services and the Department of Education to use TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) Dollars to address the academic and non-academic barriers to learning by providing community based services in the schools. Success with this concept in a formal model began in the nearby Fairless School District under the name of CARE TEAM. AHEAD began to work closely with Massillon City School Administration and specifically at the Massillon Middle School staff to develop the pilot program so it would fit the needs in the Massillon School District. The project includes the development of partnerships with community and county agencies to provide supports for students and families. In working with several other school districts within Stark County and as a part of an interagency collaboration, we have found that the unique relationship that the Massillon City School District has with AHEAD has provided an ease in the transition and development of CARE TEAM. This partnership has enhanced the cohesiveness of the Team and has helped bring more resources and services to the students. The Team known as TIGER P.A.T.H.S. – (Promoting Achievement Through Healthy Strategies) consists of Principal, Guidance Counselors, Behavior Coach, Family Involvement Coordinator, Nurse, Security Officer, Attendance Officer, After school Coordinator, AHEAD Director, Mental Health Provider and others as needed. Many studies have shown that reducing and eliminating both academic and non-academic barriers to learning and providing learning supports to families provide an opportunity for long term student success. Collectively, these programs and partnerships enhance services for school and afterschool, promote positive results in our students and strengthen our community by promoting the well-being of families. This program involves neighborhood and community based agencies and organizations with family friendly ideas about bridging the gaps between schools and families, especially in impoverished areas and with children who are at-risk by promoting academic and life success.
