ELEMENTARY
21 st CENTURY PROGRAM

The 21 st Century After School Enrichment Program is an academic enrichment program that operates in four of Massillon’s seven elementary schools – Emerson, Franklin, Smith and York. Students from all of Massillon’s elementary schools are eligible to participate. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis and tend to fill up quickly.

STAFFING & CURRICULUM

Each classroom is staffed with a certified teacher and an instructional aide. Students are clustered in grades K-2 and 3-5 and the class size ranges from 15-20 students. Enrichment lessons are taught using the curriculum of Dr. Roger Taylor. Visit www.rogertaylor.com for more information.

Students in the 21 st Century After School Enrichment Program alsoAHEAD participate in various recreational activities such as yoga, creative movement, kickball, dodge ball, swimming, and other activities that promote teamwork, cooperation, and improve fine motor skills.

HOMEWORK

Students are given approximately half an hour of homework time per day – more time is allotted on an as-needed basis. Both the teacher and the instructional assistant are available to provide help when requested.

Students in the 21 st Century After School Enrichment Program are able to participate in various recreational activities such as yoga, creative movement, kickball, dodge ball, swimming, and other activities that promote teamwork, cooperation, and hone fine motor skills.

MEALS

Hot meals are served at approximately 5:30 pm. Times for meals may vary by site.

SCHEDULE & TRANSPORTATION

Classes run Monday through Friday from the end of the school day until 6:00 pm. Transportation is provided via Massillon City School buses for students who live in the Massillon City School District.

ATTENDANCE

Students enrolled in the 21 st Century Program are expected to attend on a regular basis. Excessive absences will result in a student’s removal from the program.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Parental involvement is a must and the program provides the means to assist the learning process. Parents are required to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours per month, either at their child’s site or with their child at home.

COLLABORATION

The program collaborates with many agencies to enhance the after school experience - for example - Boy Scouts/Girls Scouts, YM/YWCA, Massillon Public Library, Massillon Boys & Girls Club, Stark County Educational Service Center, Massillon Museum, Ohio Reads, Massillon Parks and Recreation, Community Services of Stark County and the West Holistic Health Center. Field trips to historical, ecological and business organizations provide a broad experience.

Summer programming is also offered for six weeks each summer. This runs four days per week from 9:00 am until noon. Dates for the elementary Summer 2005 Enrichment Program are June 27 th through August 4 th. See brochure for details.


MIDDLE SCHOOL - KALEIDOSCOPE KIDS PROGRAM

AHEADThe Kaleidoscope Kids After School Enrichment Program services students from both Lorin Andrews and Longfellow Junior High Schools. Students choose from approximately 15 different quality programs, such as poetry, science, foreign language, dance, karate, sports, creative arts and more. The goals of the Kaleidoscope Kids Program are:

  • To provide a safe drug free atmosphere for middle school age students
  • Allow the students to work with teachers and adults in a relaxed atmosphere
  • Give students positive role models
  • Offer small programs to allow proper attention to the students
  • Allow the students to stay involved in school
  • A great alternative geared to students that do not excel in sports
  • Offer an attachment to a group
  • Reaffirm that learning can be fun and interesting

STAFFING & CLASS SIZE

Programs are staffed by certified teachers, coaches, and YMCA/Recreation Center small group instructors. The size of the class is dependent on the type of program offered; class sizes range from 7 to 15 students, all classes have a maximum capacity set by the instructor.

HOMEWORK

Homework help/tutoring are available daily.

Transportation is provided via Massillon City School buses for students who live in the Massillon City School District.

SNACKS

All students in the Kaleidoscope Program are provided with a nutritious snack.

ENROLLMENT

Enrollment varies depending on sport season and school activities, but has remained around 125 students per session.

COLLABORATION

The Kaleidoscope Kids Program collaborates with the following agencies/organizations:  Boys & Girls Club of Massillon, YMCA, Massillon Library, Massillon Museum, Lyons Den Golf Course, Massillon Self Defense Academy, West Holistic Health Center, and Chris T's Dance Emporium.

Summer programming is also offered for six weeks each summer. This runs four days per week from 9:30 am until 12:30 pm. Dates for the Middle School Summer 2005 Enrichment Program are June 27 th through August 4 th.


AHEAD SOCIAL SERVICE CENTER

  • Extension of the After School Program
  • Partners with various agencies and organizations (Massillon and Canton) to serve and empower families
  • Assesses family needs for referral to appropriate agencies
  • Centralization of services (various agencies use our site for service)
